Compressed gas system


  • A Compressed gas system is made up the following component 

1. Compressor
    Function : Increase gas pressure by reducing gas volume
2. After Cooler 
    Function : Removed head regenerated  during compression.
3. Separator 
    Function : Removes gross liquid and solid contaminant condensed by the after cooler
4. Separator Drain Valve
    Function : automatically eliminates oil, water and solid collected by separator from the compressed gas system
5. Receiver
    Function : store gas pressure, absorbs pressure surges caused by a reciprocating compressed, incorporates a drain valve to remove gross liquid contaminant passed by separator
6. Coalescing Pre Filter
    Function : Removes aerosol of oil and water  plus particulates from the air stream. Incorporates an automatic drain valve to eliminate coalesced liquid from the compressed air system.
7. Dryer
    Function : Removes oil, and water vapor from the air stream, also must remove chemical contaminants.
8. After Filter
    Function : In a desiccant dryer, the after filter removed the inevitable desiccant fines which would otherwise pass to down stream component.

Coalescing Filter work.

Coalescing  is a process which force all the water and oil droplet to come together, and from large and larger droplet which eventually grow so large that they can no longer be carried by compressed air or gas stream. This process of making big drop out of little drop is what give a filter it's high efficiency.

It is not as simple as it seem to achieve high efficiency in coalescing process. Many complex mechanisms must take place within the filter to ensure that coalescing take place throughout the rang of incoming droplet size.

it's a relatively simple process to remove large, visible drop from compressed air steam. These drop can't be carried along by the air and need only  be drained from sum area. How ever, the vast majority ( over 90% ) of droplets range in size from 0,01 to 50 micron. The mechanisms used to remove the droplet are as the following : 

1. Direct Interception
    Occurs when a filter medium with pores smaller than the size of a water or oil droplet is place in the flow stream. The filter medium will act as a sieve causing virtually 100& f those oil or water droplet. one micron or larger to impinge on the filter. Once these droplets come in contact with the filter coalescing begin.

2. Inertial Impaction
   Occur when a droplet inertia prevents it from changing direction and avoiding the filter medium. This filtering mechanisms will cause over 99,99% of those droplet in the size range of 1 micron to 10 micron to lum to strike the filter medium, coalescing began.

3. Diffusion Interception
    is the key to high efficiency for the removal of very small droplet and mist. these extremely small droplets exhibit random movements call " Brownian Motion " . This back and forth motion allows the filter to capture small droplets provided the medium pore size is smaller than distance by the droplet in the up and the down direction.

it's only through the combination of all the factors that a coalescing filter can provide the high liquid removal efficiency required for compressed air and gas systems. The Key function of the coalescing filter is to protect the Dryer from liquids both oil and water.
